How to stand out from other jobseekers

13/7/2020

Applying for a new job? Learn how to stand out from other candidates!Picture
The job market is always competitive.
Standing out from other jobseekers is hard at the best of times. Adding the impact of COVID-19 and an increase of jobseekers competing, it can seem even more daunting. So now employers have more choice than ever as many jobseekers face unemployment, here’s our tips on standing out from the crowd!
1.Volunteer - develop soft skills employers look for.
Volunteering helps prevent “CV gaps” employers may question. It also gives “on the job” experience you can include CV so it’s a great way to build your CV if you’re new to the workforce!
  • Volunteering is usually unpaid, but minimal/ casual hours can be negotiated
  • Keep a log or portfolio of work you complete and ask for feedback
  • Build your reputation and get recommended through your new network for paid / long term work
  • Some companies will let you help or “shadow” them. Some won’t, be brave enough to ask!
  • Search online for “local volunteering” or call companies which interest you

2.Upskill - improve those job-specific skills.
If you don’t have the right skills or experience, don’t put yourself in a deflating situation where you’re likely to get a rejection email. Instead focus on being a candidate that can’t be missed:
  • Know the job specific skills you’re applying for and ask yourself honestly “do I have these?”
  • Check local university or polytech  courses as you might be eligible for funding for learning
  • It is possible to study alongside your current employment or commitments – online courses are a great way to study at your own pace!
  • Check local council websites for events to gain new skills like public speaking
  • Sites like MeetUp provide community events….learn coding, find a new network or start a hobby – there’s a selection of free and paid events!

Whilst some companies and jobs can dictate that you need qualifications, others are willing to consider candidates who may be unqualified but show commitment to their own professional growth.

Once you have a new skill or experience, you can upload this onto your profile at coHired so we can consider this when trying to match you to local companies who need these skills too!
